At Speech with Sarah, we specialize in working with both children and adults to address communication and cognitive challenges in the following areas:
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Social Pragmatic Disorders
Individual therapy is provided in our clinic-based setting and is one-on-one with a certified speech-language pathologist. We always invite families to be an active member of the team and therapy sessions. Our sessions are scheduled for 30-50 minutes and frequency is determined based on the need of each individual and as a team with the family.
PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) is an approach to speech therapy provided by PROMPT-trained speech therapist, Sarah Burgon. PROMPT develops motor control for the accurate production of sounds, words, phrases, and sentences. PROMPT therapy is an effective therapy approach for people with motor speech disorders (apraxia of speech), articulation disorders and non-verbal children. Many patients with aphasia, apraxia/dyspraxia, dysarthria, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries and autism spectrum disorders have benefitted from PROMPT therapy. Contact us to learn more.
Orofacial Myology Therapy is provided by a trained speech-language pathologist and is designed to address challenges such as thumb/finger sucking, routine habit of resting with the lips apart, tongue thrust, mouth-breathing patterns, etc. Click here to learn more about our intensive thumb sucking program.
We also offer Group therapy sessions. Our social skills groups provide kids the opportunity to work on social communication skills with peers in a fun and social setting. Throughout the year our therapists will be offering a series of teen social groups. These groups are based on the social learning curriculum and are tailored to the need of the clients. We also offer parent/caregiver training using the Hanen method for early communicators. Please check the blog for the schedule of upcoming groups!
An evaluation will asses the patient's skills in the areas of concern. Evaluations typically take 1-1.5 hours and include caregiver interview, observations, and standardized testing if possible. At the end of the session, recommendations will be made and a therapy plan will be formed with the family. The speech-language pathologist will write a report of the findings, recommendations, and suggested therapy goals.
